This is a sticky wicket. Over my 33 years I have had to do similar things,
but have not charged. That said, I "used" the experience to garner favors
when I needed them, so in affect I did get paid. I also do NOT consider
myself an illustrator so "good enough for government work" was my motto, and
while I gave it my best shot, and probably did better than any other
teacher, I would not consider my work marketable or even copyrightable. When
possible, I would offer up one of my best illustration students for the job,
but then I would negotiate for payment for my student and the student in
turn would have the printed brochure, poster, etc. along with the original
drawing for their portfolio for college. (I had my students keep a log on
how long it took to do and then charged $20 an hour for the student). Fast
forward 33 years. We now have a graphic design teacher and department. All
requests go through him, and bypass me.
