Hi Moose,

* Be sure you give your students enough time to clean up. (time
management)

* At the beginning of class, tell a student the clean up time
and ask them report to you when it gets to be that time.(ownership of
cleanup time)

* Play some marches for an upbeat tempo. Try a cheap cd of Sousa
Marches. (adjusting tempo of classroom)

* Take and display a photograph of each area cleaned up so
students can see what you expect. (clear expectations for all)

* Specifically list the daily clean up activities you expect on
a large poster hanging for all to see.(Clear expectations)

* Refuse to dismiss class till all is cleaned up. Refuse to give
late passes, too. (showing students you are serious)

* Encourage group thinking - clean up your table, not just your
spot. You (teacher) direct slackers to specific cleaning
activities.(students take ownership beyond themselves)

* Assign various specific areas of clean up to each spot at the
table. (students take ownership beyond themselves)

Maybe some of these strategies will help.

Subject: [teacherartexchange] clean up strategies

Hello all,
I'm wondering if you can suggest some structured clean up strategies
that you've used. I'm teaching middle school art, and am trying to
come up with ideas that will make for a smooth process in which the
kids themselves take charge. All ideas welcome.
thanks,
moose wesler
