[teacherartexchange] Paper Casting Troubles

The pulp needs the water to be pulled out of it - and dry plaster will
do that. After you cast the plaster, leave it to dry for a day or so
and don't shellac or grease it. You would only need to do that if you
were pouring plaster into a plaster mold. The plaster should suck the
water out of the pulp, and when the pulp dries, it will pop right out of
the mold.

Hello! I am trying out a paper casting for the first time and I am
having some trouble getting the results I expected. I would really
appreciate some tips from someone with more experience with this
method.

I had the students make a relief design out of sculply clay, then we
filled the design with plaster to create the mold.

The molds were then coated with two coats shellac and sprayed with
Pam.

We blended up cotton liner to create our pulp and pulled a thick
sheet of paper, then pressed it into the mold. We back filled the
deeper areas with chunks of the pulp to make the back of the sheet
more level.

The pulp seems to still be sticking in the molds, and also the paper
is easily torn apart. Do I need to add some kind of glue added to
the paper pulp?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Lisa
