Dear Art Educators,

Sergio sent me this Lesson link.
Artistic Elements: Exploring Art Through Descriptive Writing
http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=318

I may have posted it before. I remember reading it when I was looking
up Visual Literacy.

Summary:
"In this lesson, students become engaged in the studies of both art
and written language, as they create descriptive writing pieces. Using
the book Anna's Art Adventure as the basis for discussion, students
are led through a scaffolded lesson in which they use adjectives to
describe the color, shape, line, and mood present within various
pieces of artwork. When their descriptions are complete, students are
then asked to use their observations to create their own renditions of
an artist's work."

Lesson suggests two class periods, but I think students may need more
time to really do a good job writing and drawing. I have not seen the
book, so don't know how much time reading that and going over the art
featured would take.

Here is a link to the book used:
http://www.amazon.com/Annas-Art-Adventure-Picture-Books/dp/1575053764
Anna's Art Adventure by Bjorn Sortland; illustrated by Lars Elling
(book got mixed reviews)

Lesson idea can be adapted to upper grades, too (write up a detailed
description of a work of art - then have a partner try to draw from
the description).

Regards,

Judy Decker
