Hi all,
I just bought a new book that I thought I would share with everyone.....I'm
enjoying it so far, and I think it will be very useful when teaching modern
art.
Sue
"How to read a modern painting: Lessons from the modern masters"
by Jon Thompson
Covers 140 artists (each is a two page spread). Historical reference for
each artist is given, as well as 3-4 images of significance per artist, as
well as a very clear discussion around at least one image per artist.
Apparently a companion to "How to Read a Painting" 2004
From the back cover -
Begining with the Barbizon school and the Realist movement of the
mid-nineteenth century, Thompson leads the reader through more than a
century of painting, right up to the avant-garde movement of the 1980s.
Suppliementing main examples with realted works both contemporary and
historical, Thompson explores each artist's use of media and symbolism and
provides biographical information to help the reader unlock the painting's
meaning.
