I usually do paper weaving with first grade. If you can put copy paper in your copy machine, here is one way. I make a pattern on one piece of 9 x 12 paper by drawing lines. Turn the paper portrait way, draw a horizontal line about an inch down from the top. Then draw vertical lines from that horizontal line down to the bottom of the page. I make these line about an inch apart also. Then I run it through the copy machine and tmake enough for all the kids to have a paper loom. They write their name across the top and then cut up to the horizontal line and stop. With 2nd graders I let them do something similar but they use a ruler to draw the horizontal line across the top, write their name in the space and then they cut from the bottom of the paper up and stop at the line, but they cut wavy lines. Then for both projects they finish by weaving with 1 in. strips of paper. The wavy line looms look really cool. For kids that "get it" I let them double weave by putting another color of paper strips cut 1/2 wide
through the weaving They put a dot of glue on the edges to keep it in place. I do a lot of practice with repeating the over , under, over , under etc.. I have kdg weave on their chain link fence around the playground with that plastic webbing that you can buy to repair lawn chairs. I cut it in lengths and burn the edges so it won't fray. After we do that in class I give the box of strips to their teacher and they all love to weave at recess. I don't do the soda straw weaving until 4th grade because the younger ones have trouble getting the yarn into the straws and tying knots. I have done another weaving project where you give the students a piece of burlap and they pull out sections of the weave that goes up and down. Then they weave back into the space with yarn, lace, ribbons ,etc. These look very cool.
