My principal would send them right back to me if I
hadn't written detentions first.
I would write many many before-school detentions. I
would have the paperwork filled out before they get to
class, so all I would have to do is minimal
fill-in-the-blank. I would give them all at once, but
write them so that no more than 2 kids were serving
detention the same day. If they throw away the form or
don't show up, (both of which are likely) then it is
Saturday School. If they don't show up to Saturday
School they have days in the "alternative center",
which at least gets them out of the classroom (we
still send work). If they are in athletics and get a
detention from any teacher, the coaches make them do
major extra work at practice. Why before school? It is
the most convenient for me. I do not do detentions for
their convenience. If they can't serve in the morning,
tough, don't get a detention.
And clay throwing means no more clay, ever, while they
are in my classroom. It means working out of a
textbook. I tell them that I can do my job without
them ever actually making anything (I don't actually
believe that of course), that if they can not be
trusted with materials, they won't have access to
them.
