A million years ago when I taught elementary school I began my first
graders weaving by having students "weave" strips of fabric, rope,
ribbons, sticks, etc. into the school chain link fence around the recess
space. We practice over, under , over, under. Once that concept was
understood, some would experiment by wrapping or creating other patterns
and finding other materials to use. Some would leave tails that would blow
in the wind. We'd leave it up for a while, and more students would add to
it during recess. After a couple weeks, or after a good rain, I took it
down.
