RE: [teacherartexchange] 1st grade weaving?

When I student taught many many many moons ago, I did a weaving project with
1st graders. I used drinking straws through which the yarn (warp) was put.
(of course I had to 'suck' all the yarn through the straws to show the kids
how to get the yarn through.) Each kid got 5 straws. Then they 'weaved' (or
is it "wove?") on the straws, and when the straws were covered with the
'weft', they pushed the weft off onto the strings that came through the end
of the straws...and they continued the process to weave a long strip as a
belt. Does that make any sense??? Anyway it was easy for them to do, and
they all sort of looked like they were playing pan pipes while doing it.

Subject: [teacherartexchange] 1st grade weaving?

One of our first grade teachers wants me to do a yarn
weaving with the 1st graders. It would just be a
small square, not a big one. I have only taught yarn
weaving with middle schoolers. Do you think 1st
graders can handle this and do you have any
suggestions or tips for me? I'm at a gifted and
talented school, and most of the kids are pretty smart
(obviously), although their motor skills are still at
a first grade level. Let me know if you have any good
ways of teaching this to little kids. thanks, Marcia
