The bonus of knowing basic HTML is the ability to edit things on your site
and to add dynamic functions that add abit of that "wow" factor. I begin my
web page design class by having them code a VERY basic page, with minimal
HTML coding. Then I have my kids create a webpage using Geocities free
program (they put all their personal assignments on this page - you can see
some of the assignments we've done this year at
http://www.geocities.com/webtechclass ). Then we create pages using both
Netscape Composer and Microsoft Word, and ending with Frontpage (which is
VERY similar to Dreamweaver, which I also enjoy, but it is pretty pricey).
This gives the kids a wide variety of progams and options to use when they
create pages. I tell my students that all of that coding beyond the basics
is not really important to know - if they want to know what it means then
they can take an advanced class at the local college, but by knowing the
basics they can have the freedom and ability to play around.
