It seems to me that you have some basic choices for your
organization:

You can do Elements and Principles of Design. Every level
does an assignment based on Line etc.

You can pick a Themesa and do it
with all levels with harder projects for the
upper grades--for example a theme of Medieval Times
or Exploration or insects. Maybe the little kids would
hear a story about bugs and the big kids would make
giant paper mache insects. The next year you would
need to do a different theme. You could repeat every
6 years (K-6th?)

You can also base your organization on different artists
perhaps working in a chronological way. Start with cave
days and the little guys paint a cave (under the desks--it's been
on the list somewhere)--maybe the older ones carve a Venus
sculpture out of plaster (that should get a rise out of parents)

Your first year you are really scraping to find enough assignments
to cover each grade, each week, but the next year you can refine
it and start to enjoy yourself.

for arted list serve:
i've been reading this list for awhile, and i just got
a job today in an entirely african american grade
school. i've taught in an african american high school
and even all african american adults, but this part
time position with very few materials is freaking me
out. i'm a fresh art ed grad who knows what she
believes and how to implement that, but as a young
while female, i feel out of place, but honored that i
was accepted for this challenge. my question is: where
should i start w/ kids who haven't had art in a year
and 1/2? i love the school, the students, the staff,
and what's expected of me. it's going to be hard, and
i'm grateful for that. i have plenty of great lessons,
i just don't know how to organize them. ANY advice
would be appreciated. thank you all so much.
