This might be your grab - the sports. Last year I showed my middle school
students how to draw "hot dog men" (gesture drawings - but "hot dog men"
always brings that immediate visual to me! *L*) I showed them how to catch
the pose in 20 seconds, and then they took turns posing and drawing the pose
quickly. We spent one class period on this, and then I had them bring in a
photograph of someone in an action pose in whatever activity they enjoyed -
football, basketball, ballet, etc. I had several pictures on hand as well.
Then they posed for each other in the same pose as the photo and once they
had captured the immediate pose they personalized them. I had them transform
the sports team logo to their own mascot, and for faces they could draw
their own or a friends. For practice I had them find eyes/noses/mouths in
magazines and practice drawing those individually. The trick is to break it
into little chunks of information and then help them put it all together.
