Stacie, It sounds like you are doing what we all did in our first years.
At least I did any ways. You are trying to do too many things too quickly.
When they aren't getting the concept, you are moving on.
Try, TRY to think like a kid, one of your kids in this class. What really
interests them? Really interests them? I haven't a clue most times. Rather
than second guess you could make a simple note photocopy it, and ask the
younger teachers or all the teachers who work with them for input about
what seems to interest them. DON'T MAKE A VALUE JUDGEMENT about what it is.
During the last 5-10 minutes of your next class with them have a simple 1/2
page sheet listing some general ideas for future projects. Introduce what
this is by saying. "I feel that some of the past projects have not
interested many of you." "This sheet gives you a chance for you to give
the chance to help me plan for your class.( you may get some annoying oral
comments at this point, don't rise to them.) Please check off what you
might be willing to try, and leave the sheet in the middle of the table."
It does help to have at least an Internet print out of what the choices
are, cause they may not have a clue what a Klimt Scratch board looks like.
Most middle school student value realistic drawing but they don't have the
skills, and they really get frustrated...I would continue to look back at
concepts they haven't gotten and make some strategies to re teach them
through other art materials and subject matter.
The Hardest thing to do is stand up in front of them, looking cheerful
loving and positive every day... and find the good in them every day... To
have a sense of humor.. to be patient... the worst kids often can turn on a
dime and be your strongest supporters... Randy ...
