Hi all.
Sorry I haven't responded to this earlier.....

I do mini portrait busts with my grade 10 class in clay (part of a Roman
unit)....check out
http://www.tvdsb.on.ca/woodstock/art/Courses/2005-2006Grade10/romanclayheads.htm
and
http://www.tvdsb.on.ca/woodstock/art/archives/Archives2004-2005/grade10art/grade10romanclayheadssem2.htm
to see some examples.....

I have the students start with a lump of clay, and build the head shape
using basic pinch-pot techniques....we usually have to stuff newsprint up
the head and shoulders for stablility until it dries a little.....

Usually the criteria is - human proportions, romanized (ie: we study Roman
Busts), however, from time to time the criteria changes so other
'characters' have crept in....if you look in the archives on the website,
you will find kermit as a roman!

Good luck.
Sue
