Marcia,
When I was a classroom teacher, we used the styrofoam egg cartons (the
bottom half, cut in half) for individual paint containers. Each of the
six compartments can be filled with a different color of tempera paint
or just offer the primary colors with white and black. This works well
when using small paint brushes and encourages mixing colors. Give each
child one small brush, a cup of water to clean the brush between colors,
and a small stack of paper towels to dab off excess water before using a
new color. In small groups even very young child (preschool age) can
have a great time "discovering" what colors make green or orange or
purple. The egg cartons can be saved for the next group of children or
thrown away without guilt.

Both toilet paper tubes and egg cartons can be used with other materials
to make great pieces of sculpture. Glue creations together and paint.

Have fun inventing new ideas with these great materials.
