There are plastic molds of faces in the art catalogues.
Put plastic wrap over the plastic faces then a slab of
clay. The students would create their portraits on these
slabs. When they firm up you could remove the clay to
dry completely. I suggest putting a flattened wad of
newspaper under the clay to while it dries fully.
