Hi Stacie,

YES - boring still life with a twist - Make them Surreal. Use
imagination PLUS let them look through magazines to find things to
add. They will draw the objects found in the magazines into their
composition (this use of photos works as "Research' - even though it
is also appropriation). Use books as reference for adding critters
crawling around if they want (Escher lizards and such). Critters could
even be larger the life if you want - like a scene sketch for a sci-fi
movie.

Look up Surreal Still life. There are several Dali ones on line.

Tell them now that you have the basic forms - let's do something NEW
with them.... and learn a little about surrealism in the process - and
Dali, Magritte and Escher.
