Thanks, I'll check out those lessons and call around for instruments.

Re: wanting some old instruments as they are fun to draw...
Call music stores and ask them if they have any old broken ones that you
can have. Many music stores keep old broken instruments for parts in
repair. I was lucky a few years ago and scored a guitar, clarinet,
violin, sax, and trumpet. All still look good enough to have the kids
ask me if they can play them, haha. Sure, but they don't play
anymore...that's why I got them for free!
My mixed breeds lesson (putting animal parts together to create hybrids)
is on Incredible Art Department and Switch Zoo's website. My group of
fifth graders this year is draining, too. The most work I have had to
do in years just to keep them busy. They loved the Mixed Breed lesson
and worked hard. The hand mandala lesson was very successful with them,
too. I incorporate drawing skills, as well as highlight, shading, and
blending of colored pencils with both of those lessons. We cut the
mixed breeds out afterwards and mount them on fadeless paper. They
look great when you cut them out and mount them. Hang in there. You
sure are trying everything. Once again, it's not your fault. You sound
like a very resourceful and dedicated teacher.
