Karen,
A good portfolio would have a mixture of drawings
from observation and a mixture of paintings and designs.
Have your student limit the work to those of highest quality.
No more than eight pieces are sufficient. Self portraits
are always good to include. Of course photography, digital
art, and photos of sculpture are appropriate as well.
I would think an eight graders portfolio should stress
technical ability rather that creative pieces. But, I would
suggest you speak to someone at the performing arts high school
to see what they might be looking for.
Good Luck, Woody

Karen, be careful not to reply the entire digest. Delete
all but the text that pretains to your question or comment.
Also, Jan Norman (from KC) is in PA now. If you happen to
know her, she is an expert on putting a portfolio together.
