Kara,
Your ST's university should communicate their expectations to you as far
as the ST's time observing, time teaching, how to gradually take over
classes, lesson plan formats, etc. Some colleges hold meetings and have
bound notebooks with everything a cooperating teacher needs. This will put
you at ease and clearly state your responsibilities.
Also, check with your supervisor before you "leave the room" to avoid
liability issues! Some districts frown on this because of legal
ramifications.
Be ready to encourage, encourage, encourage. Once they start teaching,
sit on your hands, bite your tongue, and let them make mistakes. After
school, talk to them about what was good and what didn't work about the
lesson or classroom management.
Some schools teach lesson plans, but not curriculum development. You may
want to share your system of curriculum writing as a possible technique when
they get their first job, until they can find their own.
I greeted my ST with a desk space of her own and a few small supplies to
make her feel welcome. Over time, the kids and I fell in love with her, so
we had a "farewell party" for her after everyone had such a good experience!
Have Fun!
