I did a very similar project with my high schoolers last year (you can see
examples at http://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?project=28517 ). I
had a glue gun with hot glue sticks specifically made for wood; the students
decided how they wanted a piece to go, then brought it over to me to get it
stuck on. They had to hold it in place til it cooled. And yes, they did
paint the sculptures white first (w/latex house paint) before adding the
colors and patterns. The main advice I'd give is make sure each piece has
plenty of area that will be in contact with the main body; even with the
wood hot glue, pieces stuck on with only a bit of surface area were knocked
off very easily.
