I've done that with difficult students. At first I hesitated because as a an art
historian I didn't want them to develop negative associations about art history,
but I got over that quickly. No fears about administrative reaction because it
was the principal who suggested it!
I told the kids that art can be taught with or without art making so no point in
complaining. This is an up-to-date, standards-based Davis textbook and quite
legal.
Don't spend a lot of time developing assignments. They should just go through
the book chapter by chapter and take notes. I gave them Cornell note
templates, which is what our school is encouraging in the core classes. The
book I used has questions at the end of the chapter, so I had them answer those
too.
Our Home Ec teacher has what she calls her "Martha Stewart" corner. She has a
couple of fusty old 1970s food textbooks and the kids have to smell the
chocolate chip cookies without being allowed to partake, so the "Martha
Stewart" corner is even more effective than my "apprentice table". Still, after a
day or two on the sidelines, all but my most hardcore "apprentices" ask to be
readmitted to artmaking.
