When I have a student teacher I have them observe me for a few weeks, walk
around talk to the kids etc. Next, I have them submit a lesson that they
want to do, usually concerning my existing curriculum and we talk. Then I
have them demonstrate and we discuss how it went and what they can do to
improve. I slowly start to leave the room and let them handle things,
coming back after 20 min. or so and checking. Eventually I will leave for
longer periods and if they are doing well I will let them go. We talk
everyday about what happened, plan for the future and then they start their
own project, if it is something I have supplies for. Anytime I feel they
are not ready to be alone I will stay. They have a lot to learn and you
can help them with tips and advise, if you are around to observe how they
are doing.
