Hello,
I can't remember what grade Stacie teaches, but
figured this idea could be used with almost any
grade....

If you are looking for a quick activity with includes
drawing, but may engage the students, and does not
take much in the way of supplies, what about
"thaumatropes"? (Basically you have a disk on a stick
with two different pictures - one on each side, like a
bird on one side, and a cage on the othe - when the
item is spun between your hands the two objects merge
visually!) The kids love it! My grade 9s were just
fasinated when I took out the file folder to remind
myself how to spell 'thaumatropes' - they all said 'do
we get to make those?!'....and they are in the middle
of painting canopic jars right now!

Anyways, here are some weblinks for you...

http://www.osv.org/kids/crafts7.htm (this one shows
how to build a simple one using the string method -
although I find the kids have better luck with a
stick.)

As for sticks - I used sections of wire coat hangers,
although bamboo skewers work also....(and those are
available at dollar stores!)

(another excellent site - includes very good annimated
diagrams, as well as other annimation ideas!

http://brightbytes.com/collection/thaum.html (really
good annimations to see how it works, as well as
images you could print)

http://digitalstudio.ucr.edu/programs/expressions/kids_curriculum/thaumatrope_activity.html
(this one has a few other ideas like fish in a fish
tank, or half your name on one side, half on the other

http://www.vam.ac.uk/moc/kids/thaumatrope/index.html
(this one has a pattern to print!)

http://pbskids.org/zoom/grownups/clubzoom/pdfs/ClubZOOMsci_D_launch_thaum.pdf
(if you look through the large PDF document, near
the end you will find a printable sample)

http://www.sciencetoymaker.org/movie/thaum.htm
(another version of the thaumatrope using a string,
but very simple design)

http://www.makemovies.co.uk/curriculum/page16.htm
(good ideas! - especially for Optical toys - would be
a good connection to OP ART)

Okay - the bell rang and I need to get back to
work....
Good luck, and hang in there!
Sue
