I didn't know you could opt out.

We have two grades. Achievement and Effort. 3rd thru 6th are a,b,c for
achievment and o,g,s and n for effort. Little ones are o,g,s and n for both.

I have a 4th grader that will get will be failing this quarter due to the
fact that there is no effort made and he never completes his projects. I
have gone as far as making him come backk at recess when he waste's art time
but he told his classroom teacher he was coming to art and played in the
bathroom instead. I wouldn't feel like I was doing the child any good by
passing him.

We are no longer allowed to consider effort or participation, count extra
credit or grade any "practice' type homework. Our county has spent a
fortune on training videos, parent education, TV shows, and PR to implement
this new grading plan. It is a SEVEN YEAR implementation process. we are
to grade solely based on state standards--and using 4,3,2,1,0 scoring it
is nearly impossible to fail--even if a kid does one assignment, they can
usually pass with a D. Oh, if you use percentages, the lowest score you may
give is 50%--even if the work was not attempted. Talk about grade inflation!
I don't think kids should fail Art--but some do pitifully little, or even
nothing.
COMING SOON TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, unless your state opted out of NCLB.
