Christine Besack posted a site quite some time ago
that I did not save...Maybe she will see this post.
Here are artists I covered when I taught elementary. I
am sure I will forget a few (it has been a while).
Mondrian, Paul Klee, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse,
Romare Bearden, Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, Andy
Warhol (this was before I was into Character
Education), Frank Lloyd Wright, Stuart Davis, Native
American Art (various cultures), African Art (various
cultures), Mexican Art.
One thing that is certain - you will NOT get a group
of teachers to agree on what artists are most
important for elementary. I picked artists that I had
resources for....then built more into my program using
artists I admired (character education is so
important). Here are recommended artists for
elementary (suggested by the list members):
Grandma Moses
Henri Rousseau
Alexander Calder (IAD has a Wire Circus lesson)
Vincent Van Gogh --2nd grade
Henri Matisse 4th grade
Geogia O'Keeffe-5th grade

Note: Teacher who recommended Lorenzo Homar had a lot
of students from Puerto Rico. You will notice that
many of the recommended artists are regional. Hudson
River School would not interest me at all for
elementary. Grant Wood would interest me more.
Here is a link to recommended Art Prints (Elementary
-through Middle school) - again, this list is long.

I believe Shorewood may now have The Scream and
American Gothic.
Go with artists YOU like...go with your passions. What
you might do is ask middle school which artists they
cover then you can introduce some of them to the
elementary students. I liked it when students already
knew a little about the artists I taught. I
deliberately repeated artists they had in elementary
(I taught middle school - elementary only for two
years). What artists are easiest for Elementary
students to understand? For which artists can you get
elementary level resources (Check Crystal Production
"Dropping In" Video/book Series - Grant Wood is new)?
For which artists has Greg Percy written songs (See
Songs in the Key of Art)?
