Here in Lawton, OK the visual arts, theater, and dance
are all highly under funded and represented. We are
the 3rd largest city in OK next to Tulsa and OKC.
Every elem. school has a music teacher and only 1 of
the 34 have a visual art teacher. Each Jr. High offers
band, vocal music, and orchestra, and visual art. No
Jr. High offers dance or theater. In HS there is
visual and all of the music and theater- still no
dance. This is our first year that our state is
offering an arts assessment for every student grade
3-8, but all our administration did was figure a way
to try and show a video to all of the students that
will cover at least one of the standards in art and
music. It is a joke and I am disgusted. My budget from
my school was $2 per student based on last years
enrollment... with an extra $5 per student from the
district called "pass through" money.. So, I am
supposed to give quality arts ed. for $7 per year!! -
I am very interested in any suggestions or comparisons
that can be made between my situation and others.
Sincerely, Mikel
