Jewelry making /Stone polishing

I teach six weeks of jewelry design to my advanced students (not AP) and I am thinking about introducing stone polishing and cutting. I need to invest about about $500 to purchase all the supplies. I was wondering if anyone has done this or is currently doing it and whether they have had much success with the process?
