All of Dave's post hit home w/me, especially the bit
about personalities 'feeding off of each other'. It
is really a battle to isolate those negative
influences from one another (the room is only so big)
AND to make sure that their negativism doesn't
contaminate the entire class, AND (one more) to make
sure that they don't receive more attention from you
(that's a tricky one) than the motivated students.
But the reason I'm posting is re the 'dumping'. When
the counselor comes to my door with a student who
wants to drop another course and join my flock, I make
it clear that all assignments and course content build
upon what came before, SO the student must make up all
assignments missed from the beginning of the year.
Sometimes the candidate has second thoughts. J.
