Re: Art classes are "blowoff" classes

Hi,
It is wonderful reading about the many ways you showcase your students'
work and I can relate to the comments that uninformed teachers make about
art classes. I experienced many of those degrading comments during the
course of my 35 year teaching career. I'd like to add the suggestion that
you showcase elementary students' art in your secondary schools. Why not a
reverse? Much too often I hear the term expressed "down at the elementary,"
as if that program and its teachers are inferior --and too often invisiible.
I think it is important for all of us to see that the "foundation" for a
good education begins at the elementary level, even before. After all, the
K-5 years comprise half of the child's educational years in standard
schooling.

Our student work is shown several times throughout the year. Our elementary
schools showcase our h.s. students work once a year. We have an art show at
our local mall where all the community and the surrounding area residents
can view the work and appreciate the talents and efforts of our young
people. We have a huge art show in May that is held in our gymnasium for
two days.
