Re: [BULK] Re: Art classes are "blow-off" classes

When your friend helped the art student get the scholarship, did she get
any PR for it?

I think as a profession, we are negligent about promoting ourselves. To
earn respect, the community has to be aware of and supportive of what your
students accomplish. Writing articles for the newspaper, publishing results
and photos of award winners, and getting your program into the community
helps to establish credibility. Once the community is impressed, the
counselors and naysayers tend to stay quiet and sometimes even become
supporters.

The issue of rigor, as previously mentioned, is important as well.
Deadlines should have meaning. Rubrics and grades should be defined.
Sketchbook homework doesn't hurt either. For just sitting in your class and
finishing all assignments, students should get "C's." If they show you
something so wonderful that you have not conceived of it before, they get
"A's."

Make yourself important. You can do this!
Christa
