We're doing a school-wide quilt project this year. It was going to be a
quilt for each classroom, but now we've modified that to be a quilt for each
grade level. (We're a smallish school; there are two classes at each level).
I was going to have kids do some applique-type work (I really wanted to do a
heart-in-hand theme with little felted hearts), but the quilts are now going
to be "lap quilts" that will be used by the recipients the classes decide
on. I have had considerable angst over the theme for each quilt, but finally
decided that each level will do a quilt related to whatever we're studying
at the time. Kinders will do a fish block, as their classes are doing an
ocean unit right now. 1st and 2nds are doing a social studies unit -
"Artists Who Made A Difference", and I think 1sts will do hearts (Jim Dine)
(2nds I'm not sure of yet...). 3rd grades are doing an architecture unit and
they'll do house blocks for their quilts. 4th and 5th will do
self-portraits. I'm thinking K-2 will use a washable resist and Dye-na-flow
paint. 3rd-5th will use a combination of fabric markers and pentel dye
sticks.
Parent volunteers are putting the blocks together in March.
