I am expected to give grades for all my K-12 students, but like you, I have a problem giving a grade when I see them 9 hours per grading period. What I have done now is for my K-6 students I give 9 week "Outcome" grades. I have my outcomes posted, and if students are understanding the outcomes, and are progressing well then they receive an "A". Excessive absences will warrent a "B". I don't give lower than that at this level. If a student is absent it is almost impossible to catch them up, and my schedule does not allow them to come in and work outside of class. I cannot justify grading finished projects when they do not have the opportunity to come in and paint, sculpt, whatever. Also, if they are sick for a week (or the 2 class periods they have each week) that student may miss an entire project. So, my outcomes based grades are based upon observation, class discussion, sketchbook reflections, etc.

Hi, I am trying to get feedback for an upcoming meeting.
There is a question why we don't grade every nine weeks. .
My question is: are there any elementary art people out there who grade every nine weeks?
If so, how many students do you have? and do you see them more than once a week?
I think that giving grades would have us be considered more important, but do think it would be a disservice to the kids. It would be like grading the student every two weeks in the regular classroom.
Any feed bback would be helpful.
Still off my computer and borrowing my husbands.......
Thanks,
Betsy
