This year I showed parts of "The Last Story Quilt" to 3rd grades. Only the
first 11-12 minutes and about another minute later on in the video. The
first part deals with her childhood/education, beginnings in art and how she
began to add cloth to her work. After that first 11 minutes there are
various stills of nudes in art and a segment on a piece called "Who's Afraid
of Aunt Jemima?", which I felt would require too much
explanation/information for elementary students. The last minute I showed
from the video dealt specifically with "Tar Beach".
I have shown the 1st "You Can Fly" video to grades K-5 at one time or
another... especially enjoyed by the younger grades (kind of that Sesame
Street short segment arrangement), but the older kids enjoyed it too, I
think.
