I teach K-12...and have done this with my sixth graders. I had eight
students that were quite unruly, and set them up at a table by themselves.
I taught them the study method...and they went with it for 2 weeks. I have
them only twice per week for 40 minutes, so not quite as stringent. Then, I
gave them a test, and let them opt to join the rest of the class for hands
on. The object lesson now is there in the back of their minds for me to
joggle and refer to.

Behavior is overall better, but they have a much shorter memory, and I
anticipate I will be having to do this again real soon until they understand
there are consequences.

I know some might feel it wastes precious productivity time...but I look at
it several ways- if it is a wasting of time at least the decision to waste
time returns once again to me and is not originated with them. Thus, I am
taking control.
Secondly, the amount of time spent disciplining and maintaining classroom
management I feel is often a waste, and the ethic to work as an option to
not have to do textbook work is returning.

I've not tried it with younger grades than sixth, though I have shared the
concept with the 5th grade. I would have to find a more appropriate book I
believe, or other methods.

In talking with other teachers...this method is often used as a matter of
routine, for example in tech ed the students do a 5-10 lab exercise before
getting to physical work.
