Re: cheating>>Betty, document the mom's response and fail the kid according to YOUR standard. You gave a second chance and an >>easy one it appears......

I don't have many options for consequences. I can't beat them, I can't suspend them, I can't kick them out of my class, 3 of the 4 have no role models at home, no intact families, two of them currently have or have had a parent (one mom out of state, one dad) in prison. We talked about it, they got detentions and took the test over at 7:45 in the morning, all failed it, but I now know what words they understand and what ones they don't. They drew nicely all hour yesterday. We have another vocabulary test friday, and if they cheat again we'll have a meeting with the vice principal. One boy's parents will also handle it at home, I know them well enough to not have to wonder about that one.

I know my students and their circumstances. Sometimes I've been to high school with their parents (the hanging up mom, for example) and/or my parents taught their parents. I know that with one of these boys at least, harsh punishment from women teachers makes a big thick wall come slamming down. He has turned in his English book and will take the F and will do nothing in that class from now on. He knows we have to move him on to High School anyway. I would rather keep those walls at bay and teach the boy some art, and if I have to be flexible with him to do that, I will. We're not just teaching them a subject and collecting a grade, we are expected to raise them as well. They know how disappointed I am, and they still love me enough to be sorry about that.
