My school's general overall philosophy (if not policy) is that kids get a
second chance to do the right thing, that making mistakes is a way of
learning, every day is a new day. I personally think that punitive
punishment doesn't necessarily work, and it is important to me that they
learn these words. This test wasn't memorization, I change the wording of
the defninitions and re-arrange the numbers so it is Not Memorization. These
are words that I/we are using in class every day - "Line", "Shape",
"Horizon", "Contour", "Value" are all words it is important to me that they
know. So as long as my students continue to miss these words, I will keep
including them on the friday tests. The point is to learn the words, not
make a certain score.
I'm just sorry they do this, partly with these boys it is testing me. I
don't know if I mentioned the mom who chewed me out on the phone this
morning because she felt inconvenienced by getting him to school early. When
I asked her if she remembered WHY he was coming in, she hung up on me.
Explains a lot.
