This sounds like a really fun lesson. At the beginning of school, I have each 4th grader make a triangle, cone, or square from a pattern. They decorate it with different patterns in shades of their color table. I have red, orange, etc. tables.  This lesson reviews pattern, shades and values of color, and shapes. Then we hang each of their shapes on a string from a circular wire from a lamp shade. This is how our table colors are distinquished. It makes for a pretty room. Next year I might have them make them into the animals.
