Sunday Morning did a segment about the Gee's Bend Quilters in Alabama that I
recorded and showed to my students last year when we were studying African
American Artists. The Whitney Museum had an online exhibit of the Gee's Bend
Quilts (I hope it's still there). Also Art Business News did a cover story
about them in an issue last year, but I don't remember which issue. All these
resources seemed to fall into my lap at the perfect time so I used them. My
students looked at these Quilts in the magazine, and online. This opened up the
opportuntiy to discuss functional issues, and aesthetic issues that just
naturally pop up when you see these quilts. The art production assignment I
gave was for my students to collage a reproduction of one of the quilts they
saw, identify the quilt, the original artist, and the source of the image they
looked at. This turned out to be a very successful lesson because I taught it
to my Art I students who hadn't yet developed any technical skills in drawing.
This being one of the first sketch book assignments, it made for a nice
beginning, one that made everyone feel succesful. You may not be able to put
your hands on the same resources, but I would imagine there are others. If I
can dig up my magazine and the video segment, I may do it again. Oh my
goodness! As I type this message, Martha Stewart is doing a segment on her
morning show!!!! I wish I were taping it!
