I quit assigning out of class sketchbook drawings due to the poor quality of
the drawings I was getting turned in. I now require they draw in their books
the first 15 minutes of every class period. These drawings must be from a
3-dimensional object that they can see in the classroom.

I teach high school and we are on block. I have the first few minutes of
class for bell work. Usually it's a drawing I assign due within 20 minutes.
Works for me. I walk around the room as they work to help out and make sure
they are doing them. Weekly I collect them for a grade. This is random
though. They never know when I will grade them.

this year I have moved to an overhead system. When they walk in it's
already on. Sometimes there are vocabulary word up. Sometimes something to
read and take notes over. Often a drawing. I test over those notes.
