In my middle school, I've been assigning sketchbooks(9"x12") for many years.
The students put it together at the start of the semester and when it is
turned in at the end of the term, it will contain assigned drawings, a collection
of preliminary project sketches, lesson notes they take from my project
introductions, graded rubrics and anything else they wish to add. I include a packet
from which they many pick 12 out of 72 suggested assignments. Many of the
listed assignments in the packet can have written responses which also puts
emphasis on writing in the art room. I grade the book and count it as another class
project. No book no grade and believe me all those honor roll kids that might
poo poo art, know how my art grade can effect their marking period averages.
It's a great addition and if I'm out or have to attend a meeting, I can use the
book as a lesson plan for the sub.
