Re: Middle School Q's: sketchbooks and quizzes

I assign a sketchbook packet of drawings every week- I schedule the
assignments so they go approx. from Wed. to Wed. so kids can do them on
school nights or the weekends. At my school an awful lot of work is
given Monday and due Friday- I didn't want to add to that. My packets
are 3 sheets of xerox paper folded in half and stapled into a booklet or
packet. They turn in a packet, I grade it, and they keep it in their
portfolio. At the end of the year, we make covers and bind them into
books. If we bind the books first, too many lose the whole thing- this
way it isn't a big crisis if one gets lost. I assign the drawing topics,
I also include some drawing lessons - step by step things like you see
in drawing books and I have 2 pages for free choice drawing in each
packet. That way they have a mix of stuff to do.
I don't usually give quizzes but do a lot of evaluation type writing-
short essays about their work or analysis of art we studied, or
explaining how to do something. When we do the color wheel I give a
regular quiz type quiz.
I teach 6th and 7th graders this year.
I really don't think you are alone assigning drawings and giving
quizzes- If it is a bet, I think your students will lose this time- :-)
