Ha Ha - when I taught High school, I used to make the kids trade their driver's license similar to your ID badge system. It worked great!

I've discovered a great way to keep track of all sorts of things with
very little effort. At my High school, students are required to wear
ID badges - so, when they request something of "value" (i.e. knives,
good paint brushes, compasses), I take their ID badge and put it in a
box on my desk. When they return the item, I give them back their ID!
Quick, easy for me and, best of all, nothing is lost or misplaced!
