I could never do horses with my high school students. They reject anything
perceived as "western", probably due to the fact that they are rural kids,
most of whom grew up on horses. They reject the "western" idea mainly due to
the fact that a large majority of the world already perceives us as "hicks".
When people visit our school we hear the same negative comments over and
over. HOWEVER, I have done this project for years with my middle school
students. I show them a power point of all the various "on parade" images -
J.Doe, chairs, Snoopy, Grant Wood, cows, corn cobs, pigs, dolphins, the list
is HUGE of all the cities who have done this. After my pp presentation my
students make pig rattles out of clay. The pigs are always amazing,
creative, and inventive. BTW - our school mascot is "Mustang". *L*
