I think that the 'angst' exhibited in much of what is seen
in
work at the high school level referred to in the earlier
post,
is part and parcel of both the age group and the times in
which we find ourselves. I remember creating artwork that
had much the same time flavor in high school and college
while living in NYC through the Vietnam War era.
I find myself now working with my own students to find
messages to communicate in their own work that need not
necessarily be as dark and looking beyond the immediacy
of the negative to the positiveness of posssibility. One of
the things that I get to do in many of my advanced classes
is to have students work around themes that they have
developed and then interpret in a number of different
assignments that they need to complete during the
duration of the quarter. That tends to open up a lot of
doors
that might otherwise not be examined.
