I rarely do contests either, but I've been doing some pondering on the benefits of students being involved in community. We ask the community to scratch our backs and I think it is good to teach the students to also give back to the community. A few years back we did a poster contest for the Lions club and tied the project into a design and symbol unit. The students were educated on the service club, which I thought was good. They gave a bond as a prize, had an assembly to present it and displayed all the students work at a bank. They also had a picture in the paper that showed students doing something positive for the community. I don't know how AAA is viewed in your community, but I would check. With art programs being cut, we need to make more people aware of our program. I could see some really cool travel brochures or posters telling how travel can educate a person. Just my 2 cents

I never do contests!!! Also, I would ask why your principal thinks you and
your students need to be doing this contest. What does it do for them? Also
do you have parent permission to enter student work in this contest? What is
your district policy regarding contests? My feeling is that whenever I
mention the word contest or competition, the work is horrible!!! Even for our
annual art show, we do not do art work for the show. The students choose a work
they consider their most successful, based on rubric developed by the students
(with some guidance!).

Sorry....I just feel these contest type things are such a drain on one's time
and resources.
