I don't often respond to messages on Artsednet, though I read almost
everything. Anyway, Pam's question caught my attention since I have had
several shibori artists give workshops in my studio to adults, and I have
taught it to elementary and middle school kids in summer camp. I am a
tapestry artist and silk painter and have loved all Japanese textile
techniques. I responded to Pam privately, but since the conversation has
continued her is my response:
As for books on the subject: SHIBORI, The Inventive Art of Japanese Resist
Dying by Yoshiko Wada is one of the best. Kodansha International.
Then there is the book from the exhibit in the Los Angeles County Museum
of art, 1992-1993. Also the World of Rozome by Betsy Sterling Benjamin ( a
good friend of mine) (Kadansha Press) which is all to do about Rozome, or
wax resist, but your haori might have mixed methods of painting. And also
printed by Kadansha, though it might be out of print now: Oplulence, The
Kimonos and Robes of Itchiku Kubota. He is a National Treasure of Japan and
has many exhibits around the world of his shibori Kimonos.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
