Hi,
Yes, I've done something like this for a Monet lesson. We used Ambrite
colored chalk crayons by Prang. They come in a big box with lots of
luscious colors. For the white effect, we used white tempera paint. The
tempera sort of melts the end of the chalk, making it much more like using
an oil pastel for blending and creating areas of color, rather than line
work. The colors become pastel due to the white.

This lesson works best with the tempera paint poured into shallow containers
like paper bowls for dipping the chalk. The chalk is long enough to be
broken in half for more use. Be aware that after this chalk has been dipped
in tempera paint, it's pretty much only useful for repeating the paint/chalk
lesson.

Does anyone have any experience with a painting technique using colored
chalk dipped in buttermilk? Supposedly the buttermilk acts like a fixative
and the chalk will spread on like paint after dipping. I'm thinking about
possibly doing this with second grade with them drawing the image in white
chalk on black paper and then painting with the colored chalk dipped in
buttermilk. I'm wondering if the chalk will smear if they wipe off the
surface of the paper with a damp sponge after it's dry in order to get off
the white chalk lines? I'm going to experiment but am curious as to whether
anyone has done this. Why couldn't you use regular milk instead of
buttermilk? What kind of chalk do you use; pastels or colored drawing chalk?
  Thanks,
  Kathy Hughes
