I just realized what basting is!! Stitching! I was thinking of a turkey baster, and using that do drip dots of dye or whatever...
yes, I'd be interested to learn how they do that! No doubt however they do it would require too much patience or planning for me!

I've read about the version of shibori you describe, but my haori is made
with "the other method" that does not provide for any random patterning.
The haori still has some basting threads in it where the individual dots
were gathered and sewn prior to the scrunching and dye processes.

My question is about planning the placement of those individual scrunches so
that after the cloth is scrunched and dyed that a deliberate design is
created. There is absolutely nothing accidental about the placement of the
dots on this haori. It would seem to me that after a certain number of dots
were scrunched and basted, that it would be almost impossible to determine
where the next dot would go.

I plan to chat with a local Japanese lady who is well versed in textiles.
If she sheds light on the design process, I'll post to the list.

It's a fascinating process that no doubt takes much practice to learn.

I think I know what you're talking about, but I think there's another method
