Spyware - I asked an "expert"

Dear Art Educators,

It is so "funny" because this is a topic I have been
"researching" lately. Do not download software from a
pop-up (I wouldn't even click on a Pop-up if I were
you). AND do not dowload SpyFerrett (it is a SpyBot
rip off). I found "Lance" (my new software "expert"
when I searched for info on Spyferret). I haven't
downloaded SpyBot yet - but will soon. If I am not
satisfied with that - then I will go with a py-for
software that is kept up-to-date. Anti virus software
does NOT catch spyware.
(If anyone want more words of wisdom from Lance - I
can forward them to you)

This is what what I found from Lance:

Just download and install SPYBOT. It is a good program
to have on hand and run regularly, too.

Spyware Blaster is another excellent aid. It just runs
in the background without any intervention on your
part:

And for good measure have Pest Patrol on hand:

and this post:
A good percentage of spyware is installed with some
programs that are offered as "freeware". The "hidden
price" is their ability to "spy" on you (Incredimail,
Hotbar, etc.). Other spying is done via "cookies"
which will be lodged on your computer by various sites
each time you visit, unless you block the cookies. But
remember, some of these cookies
are necessary for viewing some of your most frequented
sites.

If you have installed things like Zone Alarm PRO,
SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, Pest Patrol and Adaware you
have set up your defences well enough to keep most of
them out. You can visit any site you choose, but
if they appear "suspect" just remember to run those
programs to clean out anything that may have been
lodged while visiting.

In addition to the above, I run on a regular basis a
small utility called IE COOKIE VIEWER. What this does
is to present quickly a list of cookies which are
currently on my computer. I can then decide to delete
or keep them. It's very quick! Find it on the
Utilities section of this site:

Continue to post software questions to the list -- and
if we can't answer them - I'll ask Lance. He has also
helped me out with my CD-RW problem. I promised not to
"bug" him too much (smile) - and told him to aks me if
he had any questions about art or art ed (tee-hee).
